The HPA offers an apprenticeship scheme for grooms to train for either a Level 2 (Groom) or Level 3 (Senior Groom) qualification 1st4Sport. The aim of the apprenticeship scheme is to both equip staff with the necessary skills and training to succeed, and to improve the availability and quality of polo grooms in the UK.
As the national governing body, the HPA is able to offer financial support to those taking on apprentices, to enable them to support apprentices with the necessary time, resources, and training as they work and study for their qualification. Apprentices are paid a full apprenticeship wage during their training and gain a nationally-recognised qualification at the end of their course.
The apprenticeship scheme is targeted at polo clubs and academies, but other employers and business may be able to take on apprentices under the scheme provided they meet the requirements, which include access to an HPA Level 2 or 3 licensed coach and the necessary insurance and practices in place. Where accommodation is provided, this must meet HPA standards and there will be regular visits from the HPA to assess the student’s progress and learning. Apprentices must be 16 or over, living in the UK, and not in full-time education – more information about apprenticeships can be found on Gov.uk.
