HPA COMMITTEES
Our committees are made up of volunteers from both the polo and wider equestrian community, who generously give up their time to develop the sport. Committee members include several experts in their fields on safety, rules, welfare, and more, and our welfare committee includes several veterinarians. Various meetings are held throughout the year to organise the different aspects of the sport, and the council meets twice a year. We occasionally invite applications for new committee positions; keep an eye on your member’s newsletter.
HPA Chair – Will Lucas
Will is a third-generation polo player whose father and grandfather were also passionate about the sport. Learning the game at Cowdray before turning professional at 24, Will played professional polo for 23 years, with over 50 appearances for the England team. Now based in Gloucestershire with his wife Zahra, where together they run Longdole Polo Club, with a focus on making polo fun, friendly, and accessible to all.
Will took over the Chairmanship from Nick Wiles at the end of 2023, having been vice-Chair since 2019 and Chair of the Umpire & Rules and Handicap committees. Speaking of the new role, Will said: “Polo has always been a huge part of my life and I am thrilled to be proposed as the next Chairman of the HPA. Nick has been a fantastic Chairman and I know we are all enormously grateful for his dedication to polo which has led us through a tumultuous four years. I am looking forward to growing the sport, whilst continuing to be mindful of safety and welfare, and I am excited to be taking the game into the future”.

HPA Stewards
The HPA Stewards form the board, and they make all major decisions for the organisation. Six of the Stewards are elected by the clubs and stand for a 4-year term, with six also appointed by the Chairman. A further Steward is appointed by each of the four major high-goal clubs (Cirencester, Cowdray, Guards, and RCBPC), and there is also a representative of the UKAFPA. The final two members are the vice-Chair and the previous Chair. More details on how Stewards are appointed are available in the Blue Book.
The Polo Charity
The Polo Charity Trust was originally set up in 1992 by the late Viscount Cowdray, who along with Prince Philip led the post war revival of the sport in Britain and served as Chairman of the HPA from 1952 to 1967. Gen Sir Reddy Watt is the current Chairman, and the other Trustees are John Tinsley, Elsbeth Talbot-Rice KC, Rosie Vestey, and Roderick Vere Nicoll. The Chairman of the HPA is invited to attend any meetings of the Trustees who meet meet formally twice a year. Applications for funding can be made through the HPA at any time, and must meet one of the charities objectives, which can be found on the link below.
