Ireland’s Niall Donnelly and England’s Nina Clarkin will go head-to-head for the Olympic Trophy on 9 June
The Hurlingham Polo Association are delighted to announce the teams that will compete for the Olympic Trophy this summer, in an International Test Match at Chesterton’s Polo In The Park on 9 June 2023. This historic tournament, supported by official clothing partner Hurlingham Polo 1875, brings polo back to its spiritual home at Hurlingham Park, London, for three action-packed days.
The team representing England is Nina Clarkin (3), Ed Banner-Eve (5), and captain Max Charlton (6). They face the team from Ireland captained by Richard Tyrone (6), alongside Niall Donnelly (4), and Evan Power (3). With a handicap difference of 1, England will concede 0.5 goals in what looks to be a fierce match.
England captain Max Charlton says “It’s brilliant to bring polo to a different audience at such a unique venue, and I can’t wait to play at Chesterton’s Polo In The Park again this year. It promises to be a thrilling game between two strong teams. Nina and Ed are fantastic players and we’re looking forward to giving the Irish team a run for their money in front of our home crowd.”
As the only female in this mixed tournament, top England women’s player Nina Clarkin says “I’m really looking forward to Chesterton’s Polo In The Park and I am thrilled to be representing England. I’m so looking forward to taking to the field with great teammates and against a strong Irish side. I am not daunted by the prospect of being the only woman on the field, rather I am excited to play on such a big day and to represent my country. It is always an honour and a privilege to wear the England shirt.”
Ireland captain Richard Tyrone has thrown down the gauntlet with a strong challenge, saying “It’s a great honour to be able to play for the Olympic Trophy. It holds great history between our two polo nations, especially in the home of polo at Hurlingham Park and in front of an electric crowd. We are determined to win the test match and wish it to be a great spectacle.”
