We are sad to announce that Major Iain Forbes-Cockell, a life playing member of Guards Polo Club and a familiar face at Smith’s Lawn for more than 40 years, died suddenly last week. Known affectionately by everyone as “The Major”, Iain wore many hats at Smith’s Lawn – player, umpire, commentator and military player liaison – in addition to being an excellent writer on the sport he loved. “The Major”, a former officer in the Life Guards, was also an invaluable polo historian, with an inexhaustible fund of stories and anecdotes about the game in general and his beloved Guards Polo Club in particular.

A full tribute to him will appear in our 2018 Yearbook – a publication he regularly and excellently proofread – but every member of his Guards family send their deepest condolences to his daughters, Annabel and Emma, and the wider Forbes-Cockell family.

We will publish details of any funeral and memorial services at a later date.
