Tiro is hosted by HPA Affiliated Academies, so you can play fun and competitive polo in a safe and supportive environment.

Offchurch Bury Polo Club is a family run business set in the beautiful grounds of the Offchurch Bury Estate, just to the east of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. OBPC provides a fun and friendly polo experience for our members and those learning to play or looking to start. OBPC is also one of the busiest and most successful University training centres in the UK.

Run by England polo player Grant Collett and his wife Tessa, the club’s focus is on grassroots polo for all players, low goal, and beginners alike. The club has one full size polo ground, a chukka pitch, a stick-and-ball practice area, a purpose built brand new, all weather 100m x 50m polo arena with Andrew Bowens surface and ponies a plenty (suitable for beginners and low goal) all available for hire.

Dart Polo Club is a family run club dedicated to creating fast, open polo, with a quality, relaxed and professional atmosphere. DPC caters to beginners and amateurs and is run by Ed Morris. DPC is located in Gate Burton, Lincolnshire set within an idyllic country estate. With a full time team maintaining the ground, and plans to expand, DPC have an exciting vision to create a friendly, welcoming club for all levels.

Druids Lodge Polo Club, based near Salisbury, WIltshre, is a friendly club with professional approach to learning and playing polo. From coaching for complete newcomers to competitive tournament polo, any new or established polo enthusiast will find a warm welcome at Druids Lodge. Druids has become a thriving polo club with over a hundred playing members in the summer and winter, four grass polo fields, an all weather floodlit arena, clubhouse, and stabling for up to eighty horses.

Druids Lodge and the Ormerod family have built an international reputation for their standard of coaching and  for the high quality string of more than forty school ponies that are available to play here. Druids horses can be seen under international players in test matches year after year, as well as guiding beginner players through their very first steps. Druids is proud to be the go-to training facility and polo pony provider for many of the south of England’s schools, universities and military teams.

Teams

• Teams must have at least one consistent player

• Three players to a team all year round – but these players can change!

• Players can only compete for one team

• Players join the HPA as a Clubhouse Member (£35) if not already registered

• Players must be -2 handicap or have a lesson with an HPA-licensed coach and pass the rules test

Training

Academies may run dedicated training sessions to:

• Help you get comfortable with ponies

• Learn rules, teamwork, and tactics

• Get ready for tournament play

Matches will be umpired by qualified coaches with some coaching time between chukkas.

Ponies

• All games are played on hired ponies only

• Ponies are provided by the host academy or affiliated hirers

• No need to worry about organisation or transport — just turn up and play!

Tournaments

• Each team will play 2 matches of 2 chukkas each in one day. If there are only two teams, it will be one match of 4 chukkas with a half-time break

• Travel between host academies to compete across the season and score points!

• Points awarded:

🥇 Win: 60 🥈 Second: 40 🥉 Third: 20 🎖️ Fourth: 10

• League winners will be crowned at The Polo Awards (from 2026)

How to join

To play Tiro Polo, you’ll need to join the HPA as a Clubhouse member for just £35. This also provides you with exclusive member benefits including email newsletters, member discounts, and access to HPA TV, so you can watch polo all year round! Create an account on Sport80 to get started.

FAQs

No! Tiro Polo is played entirely on hired ponies provided by the host academy. All HPA affiliated academies are licensed Riding Establishments with their local council.

You’ll take a lesson with an HPA coach, and if you’re safe to play, you’ll take a rules test to earn your -2 handicap.

Just your hat and boots. Your academy will provide the rest. If your team would like to provide their own team shirts, this is encouraged – or you can just dress to match!

Tiro Polo costs £350 per person, per tournament at any academy — this includes pony hire, equipment, coaching, and prizes over 4 chukkas.

If you have a team ready to go, contact the host academy to make your team entry. If you don’t have a team, contact your local HPA affiliated academy or the host academy to start training and they’ll find you a friendly team to join.

There are no age restrictions, but younger players may be better suited to Pony Club or SUPA programmes. If you want to play Tiro Polo as a family, then all are welcome – but remember you will be playing with all ages.

No! Casual (but safe!) kit is fine for Tiro Polo and your academy can provide shirts – but why not get creative and design your own team kit?

What you need

Players must provide:

• Riding helmet that meets HPA standards

• Riding boots with a suitable heel (chaps required with short boots)

• Host academy provides sticks and knee pads if needed
