ALL ABOUT ARENA POLO

Arena polo is played in an all-weather arena, with three players to a team. An arena membership is free for current full outdoor members – so it’s easy to start playing arena polo. There are 33 HPA-registered Arena clubs spread across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and even the Isle of Man, so you’re sure to find a club near you. Arena polo provides a friendly and welcoming start to polo for newcomers, or a great refresher for experienced players.

Use the button below to search for an arena polo club near you. Many arena clubs also play outdoor polo in the summer months, so you can play at the same club all year round. Arena clubs either have a polo school on site, or will be pleased to recommend how you can take part in arena lessons to start your polo journey.

What’s different?

The differences between outdoor and arena polo are small, but important. The object of the game and the main rules are the same, but there are some key differences:

  • Arena polo is played in an all-weather arena approximately 300 by 150 feet
  • There are three players to a team
  • A match is usually four chukkas
  • Ends are only switched after each chukka
  • The ball is larger than in outdoor polo
  • The goal area is height-limited
  • Spurs are not allowed in arena polo

ARENA HANDICAPS

Arena handicaps are adjusted from a player’s outdoor handicap, to give a wider spread and create more evenly matched tournaments. The standard adjustment is one goal higher than a player’s outdoor handicap – but this can be changed by the Arena Handicap Committee. Search for a player below to find their current outdoor and arena handicaps.

If you have a current HPA outdoor handicap, you will be given an arena handicap one goal higher than your current outdoor handicap when you add your arena membership. This can be reviewed and changed by the Handicap Committee at the recommendation of your club.

If you have previously held a HPA handicap but haven’t played in the UK for a season or more, or you have held a handicap elsewhere in the world but have never had an HPA handicap, you will need to submit a CV form. Your handicap will then be added to your profile, and you can login to complete your membership.

If you have never held an outdoor or an arena handicap anywhere in the world, you will need to pass the Rules Test – your club will give you the password to take the test. Once you’ve passed, your club will send the results and their handicap recommendation to the HPA, and you will be able to login and purchase membership.

Create a new account on Sport80, or login to manage an existing membership. Click the coloured status button to add an arena membership and proceed through the checkout. Current full outdoor members will not be charged, but still need to add their arena membership through Sport80.

Welcome to polo! Arena polo is a great way to get started in the fantastic sport. No riding experience is needed, and players of any age are welcomed. Our academies and clubs are the best place to start; use the search function to get started.

Current full outdoor members can enjoy a free arena membership. Simply login to your Sport80 account, and click on the coloured status button to add the arena membership to the basket. Follow the checkout process to complete your membership; you won’t be charged. Once your club has approved your arena membership, you’re ready to play!

If you’re a new member, you can join online for your arena membership through our membership platform, Sport80. If you have never held an outdoor or an arena handicap, you will need to pass the Rules Test – your club will give you the password to take the test. Once you’ve passed, your club will send the results and their handicap recommendation to the HPA, and you will be able to login and purchase membership.

If you have held a handicap elsewhere in the world but have never had an HPA handicap, or you have previously held a HPA handicap but haven’t played in the UK for a season or more, you will need to submit a CV form. Playing memberships starts at £160, with discounts available for Under 18 or Pony Club. Your membership is charged based on your outdoor handicap. A full breakdown of membership fees is available on the Membership page.

THE BRYAN MORRISON TROPHY

The international highlight of the arena season, the International Test Match for the Bryan Morrison Trophy is played in January each year. The All England Polo Club at Hickstead provides an outstanding venue for polo and this popular meeting is the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends after the Christmas period. The Clubhouse is open to all throughout the day, serving a range of food and drinks. There’s no better way to beat the January Blues!
